We are born with two perfectly balanced halves of the brain. Social conduct, learning and economic behaviour are the domain of the left side of the brain. We constantly practice this type of thinking, and it keeps our world running smoothly. The job of the designer draws upon the right side of the brain, which is responsible for creating new images and anticipating results. Designers imagine something that didn’t exist before. Only with the right side of the brain is it possible to visualise an image out of nothing, and only by reconciling this image with the left side of the brain is it possible to create something. An idea. The way the world works is shaped by the left half of the brain, while its possibilities lie in the right half. There is a moment when you decide between the two.
An installation by Michael Keller about two modes of perception: that of the designer and of design.
