The SCHAUSTELLE is poised for action. As a temporary activities space for the four partner collections housed at the Pinakothek der Moderne, the new venue has momentarily broken free of traditional museum constraints
to explore transdisciplinary avenues, embark on a lively course of experimentation, and present pioneering forms of cooperation in the cultural sphere. Artists, architects, designers, musicians, film-makers, dancers, and the museum-going public are all involved in the action. Allow us to present to you a preview of the joint projects about to take place here. These are a few examples of forthcoming events from just the first four weeks alone:
HÖRSTÜCK > 13.04.-19.04.2013
The performer, director, and sound artist David von Westphalen presents the voices of people who have accompanied the museum on its journey through its first decade. The museum, otherwise a predominantly visual domain, now becomes a listening space. Interviews und Montage: David von Westphalen. Kompositionen: Filip Caranica. Dramaturgie: Naomi Steuer. Tontechnik: Johannes Maier. Dank an: Matthias Günther, Wolfram Schild
IMAGOGRAPHY > 13.04.-22.04.2013
The largest walk-in instant camera in the world was invented in the 1970s by Werner Kraus and Erhard Hößle. The artist and actress Susanna Kraus has brought the camera to the SCHAUSTELLE to take the portrait of visitors and staff on a scale of 1:1.

VISUAL IDENTITY >  until 15.09.2013
In the ‘Visual Identity’ project devised by Munich-based Bureau Mirko Borsche, the visual concept behind the SCHAUSTELLE takes hold and evolves in an open, processual spirit of experimentation.
From the typeface and logos designed especially for the SCHAUSTELLE to the flyers and posters and other forms of communication through graphic design, this project organized by the Neue Sammlung will accompany the SCHAUSTELLE in an ongoing conversation held over the entire course of its existence.
LOUNGE > starting from 20.04.2013 > 12:00
The product design faculty at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, led by Carmen Greutmann Bolzern and Urs Greutmann, have designed items of furniture for use in the SCHAUSTELLE lounge. Their designs play with the project’s sense of lightness, openness, and temporary nature. You will be surprised to see what you can make from 20,000 sheets of paper!
A cooperation with the chair for product design of the academy of fine arts Munich
OPEN BOXES. APP  > starting from 20.04.2013 > 12:00
Art in the digital age? This App project developed by the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung will accompany the Schaustelle through the year until September. A constantly evolving number of new insights into the last ten years will be made available to view in the lounge on various iPads and monitors.
OPEN BOXES is a project of the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne.
CHAIRS. CHAIRS? CHAIRS? > 20.04.2013 > 17:00
The people of Munich are invited to bring their most beautiful, fanciest or most controversial chairs and present them in the SCHAUSTELLE. After being tested and evaluated by a special panel, they will be used in the SCHAUSTELLE, forming rows of seats for its visitors.
KINO DER KUNST >  24.04.-28.04.2013
Film screenings and discussions with artists and film-makers form the essence of this five-day festival of the ‘Cinema of Art’. This unique event is entirely dedicated to films by artists, who rethink cinema and explore new forms of narrative. The LOUNGE will become a meeting place for international artists, curators, and the public.
RED. GLASS. ROOM > 02.05-20.05.2013
A container made entirely from red, hand-blown glass panels creates a truly unique environment, a piece of temporary architecture with an atmosphere of its own, whose inner life constantly mutates depending on the outside light and the shadows of its contents and which explores the colour red and the idea of transparency. Design of the container: Sandra Lange and Nils Fischer, Berlin. A cooperation with Glashütte Lamberts, Waldsassen, and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich.
A cooperation with Glashütte Lamberts Waldsassen. Concept and Realization installations and performances: Teresa Vergo & Philip Decker with the support of Münchner Kammerspiele
BLACK SPACE. TWO VIEWS ON THE CREATIVE MIND >  02.05.-05.05.2013
We emerge into this world with two perfectly balanced cerebral hemispheres. Life’s functional aspects flex the left half of the brain, its possibilities the right. There is a moment when you decide between the two. An installation by Michael Keller about two modes of perception.
TAL R. CHOPPING BOARD TEA PAVILLON > 08.05.-12.05.2013
In this work ‘Chopping Board Tea Pavilion’ Danish artist Tal R and his team create woodcuts in a pavilion designed especially for the SCHAUSTELLE. The printing blocks they use are old chopping boards that the artist has spent the last few years collecting.
Originally designed as objects on which to cut vegetables, meat, or bread, they now go under the knife themselves. With a cup of sage tea, guests are invited to watch the printing process in action.
Funded by Galerie Sabine Knust, Munich
SCHAUING >  starting from 08.05.2013
In cooperation with the department of architectural design and the timber construction programme at TU Munich, some 30 provisional architectural elements, designed to suit an array of different functions, have been constructed directly in front of the SCHAUSTELLE. The wooden huts are free for temporary use. Members of the public and artists are invited to submit project ideas on how to put the spaces to use.

VIRTUAL CITY ION  > 15.05.-19.05.2013
Through the combined interaction of movements and sounds, the installation ‘Virtual City Ion’ gives rise to virtual, ephemeral, imaginary cities. Visitors become components and designers of their environment at one and the same time.
FREELAND > 22.05.-26.05.2013
The city plan ‘Freeland’ from MVRDV and The Why Factory is a design for an ideal city that is reminiscent of comics and investigates the central question: ‘What if you could start here and create your own world?’ Far removed from urban master plans and building regulations, ‘Freeland’ is designed entirely by its inhabitants. A video projection shows visions that attest to the project’s spirit of individualism, but also deal with general questions of city planning and structured space.

More projects are to follow.

[mt_toggle title=“PRESS RELEASE 26.02.2013 “ state=“closed“]

The SCHAUSTELLE, a temporary pavilion right next to the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, will be opening on 13 and 14 April, 2013. It has been designed by the internationally renowned, award-winning architect Jürgen Mayer H. of Berlin.
The SCHAUSTELLE is a place of interaction, a provisional art gallery and a space for large format works and new concepts, all at the same time. The SCHAUSTELLE is to be seen as a platform for transdisciplinary exchange, reflection, experiments and open-ended processes.   The seven-month closure of the Pinakothek der Moderne for renovation has been seized upon by the four museums housed under one roof (architecture, modern art, graphic works and design) as an opportunity to work together and interact continuously in an open forum. This thematically and conceptionally interconnected cooperation by the four institutions – something quite unique in this form – will enable a program of events to be created that spans the different genres, in which sound will be seen as architecture, design as a performance or installation, choreography as a type of graphic work or film a painterly act.

Minister of State Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch:
“Of course it’s annoying when a museum has to be closed for essential repairs after just ten years. However, it is also inspiring to see what the four collections that occupy the Pinakothek der Moderne have now put together. The SCHAUSTELLE is going to be a huge success; I’m quite certain of that.”

Prof. Dr. Klaus Schrenk, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Prof. Dr. Florian Hufnagl, Die Neue Sammlung, Dr. Michael Semff,  Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München and Prof. Dr. Andres Lepik, Architekturmuseum der TU München, Pinakothek der Moderne, state:
“For us the SCHAUSTELLE is important as it gives us the opportunity of keeping a high profile and defining a new type of museum and coooperation between the four collections.”

The name SCHAUSTELLE (lit.: ‘show site’) conjures up a variety of associations. Due to its structure of scaffolding and containers it makes a  direct reference to the adjacent museum building site. It also draws a flexible, provisional stopping place to mind in which new ideas can be discussed and developed further. The SCHAUSTELLE is a manifesto.

Dr. Corinne Rose, Head Coordinator of the SCHAUSTELLE:
“Based on the motto The SCHAUSTELLE creates itself, some of the SCHAUSTELLE’s elements will be developed gradually, like the projected lounge area, the seating and the SCHAUSTELLE’s surroundings. Provisional and spontaneous solutions are welcome; the agenda is processually based. A pivotal recurring theme in our program is the critical examination of the question ‘what is the museum of the future like?“

Dr. Markus Michalke, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne:
“The SCHAUSTELLE is a fantastic chance to present museum work to the public in a totally new way and, at the same time, to draw attention to the empty space for the second building phase of the Pinakothek der Moderne.”

The temporary building designed by Jürgen Mayer H. is a tall and partly cantilevered framework structure made of reusable scaffolding elements (interior space c. 250sqm, terrace on the first floor c. 150sqm and a 17m-high viewing platform). The majority of the construction elements, including the function-specific containers and synthetic cladding, can be put to a new use after the SCHAUSTELLE and fed back into the building cycle. In this way the production of non-reusable elements has been reduced to a minimum. This concept of appropriateness, flexibility and reduction to the simplest of means is programmatic of the SCHAUSTELLE as a whole.  “For us, a respectful, sustainable handling of material for this temporary building was important. The SCHAUSTELLE will simply be disbanded,” the architect Jürgen Mayer H. explains.  In addition to the Stiftung Pinakothek der Moderne and the Free State of Bavaria, AUDI AG has also been won as a partner for this appealing project of the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Toni Melfi, Head of Communication at AUDI AG:
“Audi stands for the experiencable – not only premium quality and technologoy but also art and design. Audi’s commitment to culture goes back more than fifty years and has benefitted from a creative exchange with the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen since 2010. This trustworthy cooperation has created points of contact between culture and industry that lead to the emergence of new forms of dialogue. Working together with the SCHAUSTELLE and the project ‘The Pinakothek der Moderne as a guest at Audi’ continues this creative exchange between the partners and presents art in an automobile context for the first time.”
