12:00 – 20:00  > Projection > KINO DER KUNST presents „House with Pool” by Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler. The artists narrate in three parallel plot lines the story of three protagonists: a woman, a girl and a man. But they never meet in the film. A kind of communication and connection between the protagonists is generated by the repetition of gestures and onesided looks. The woman and the girl seem to be beholden to each other – maybe they are mother and daughter. The man, obviously the gardener, is a secret observer of the scenario in the house with pool. Hubbard/Birchler show a story full of hints and mystery which cannot be solved. The loop format increases the narrative enigma insofar as viewers are left in the dark about the beginning and the end. Which event happens before which, remains up to beholders to decide. And leads them to watch the loop over and over again, searching for the solution they will not find.

Teresa Hubbard, born in Dublin in 1965, and Alexander Birchler, born in Baden in Switzerland in 1962, began collaborating in 1990 as artists-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts and later completed graduate degrees at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada. Hubbard and Birchler are Graduate Faculty members at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, New York. Hubbard is a Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. Their exhibition history includes venues such as the Venice Biennial; the Tate Museum Liverpool; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Reina Sofia Museum Madrid; Kunsthaus Graz and the Mori Museum Tokyo.

Die Künstler erzählen in drei parallelen Handlungssträngen die Geschichte von drei Protagonisten – eine Frau, ein Mädchen und ein Mann – die sich im Film jedoch nie begegnen. Nur über die Wiederholung von Gesten und einseitige, beobachtende Blicke wird eine Art Kommunikation und Verbindung hergestellt. Die Frau und das Mädchen scheinen auf besondere Weise verbunden, vielleicht sind die Mutter und Tochter. Der Mann, offensichtlich als Gärtner angestellt, ist der stille Beobachter des Geschehens im Haus mit Pool. Hubbard/Birchler zeigen eine Geschichte voller Andeutungen und Rätsel, die sich aber nicht auflösen lassen. Die Rätselhaftigkeit wird insofern noch gesteigert, als die Künstler nicht einmal einen Anfang oder ein Ende der Narration deutlich machen. Die Geschichte ist zirkulär, ein Loop. Welches Ereignis vor welchem Ereignis stattgefunden hat, bleibt der Entscheidung des Betrachters überlassen und führt dazu, dass er den Loop immer wieder ansieht, auf der Suche nach der Lösung, die er nicht finden wird.

Teresa Hubbard, 1965 in Dublin geboren und Alexander Birchler,1962 in Baden in der Schweiz geboren, begannen 1990 während eines Artist-in-residence-Programmes am Banff Centre for the Arts zusammenzuarbeiten und schlossen ihr Studium am Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada, ab. Hubbard and Birchler sind Graduate Faculty members an der Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, New York. Hubbard ist zudem Professorin am Department of Art and Art History an der University of Texas in Austin. Ihre Arbeiten wurden international ausgestellt, u.a. auf der Biennale di Venezia, im Tate Museum Liverpool, im Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, im Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, in der Reina Sofia in Madrid sowie im Mori Museum Tokyo.
